Pedal for Prostates
Sunday, April 26 in Burringbar
ONE FOR THE BOYS:
A grassroots cycling event in northern New South Wales is set to bring communities together for a powerful cause, with the inaugural Pedal for Prostates Bike Ride scheduled for April to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research.
Taking place on Sunday, April 26 in Burringbar, the event will see riders of all abilities take to the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, combining one of Australia’s most scenic rides with an urgent health message: early detection saves lives.
The idea was born during a casual ride and coffee stop, when organisers saw an opportunity to turn a popular trail into something more meaningful.
Event co-organiser Philip Arthur said the ride is more than just about cycling.
“We realised this incredible trail could be more than just a ride, it could be a way to bring people together and make a real difference.”
After being diagnosed with prostate cancer through a routine PSA test, Philip was able to undergo treatment before the disease spread and has since made a full recovery.
“I was lucky. Because it was picked up early, I could have surgery before it spread. Not everyone gets that chance.”
He hopes the event will encourage men, particularly those aged over 40, to take a more proactive approach to their health.
“We check the PSI in our tyres without thinking, but too many men don’t check their PSA. That needs to change.”
Participants can choose to ride the full 50-kilometre return route or shorter sections, with organisers expecting up to 150 riders from across Australia.
Funds raised will support Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and prostate cancer research initiatives, with education sessions also planned for participants and the wider community.
